Beauty Tips I Wish I Knew at 18

I used to wash my face with Doctor Bronner’s soap. My moisturizer was unrefined shea butter and I used sea breeze witch hazel every other day as a toner. If you are familiar with any of those products it should be just as alarming to you as it was for me remembering how damaging my skin routine was. I don’t believe it is lost on Gen-Z how privileged they are to have access to information regarding skin care via any social media platform. As for me in my formative years, YouTube and Guyanese lore (thanks grandma) heavily influenced my chaotic routine. What works for my skin is constantly evolving as I age but here are a few tips I wish I had known sooner about skin care.

  1. SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN

I have been plagued with hyperpigmentation since puberty. I frequently experience hormonal breakouts and I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m an anxious picker. What I have learned is a way to protect my skin from factors other than myself is sunscreen. This is a hard practice to stay consistent with as this is something you have to redo at least twice a day. From personal experience, I have noticed that my dark spots have faded faster and I’m more confident facing a sunny day when I know my skin is protected.

  1. A 10-step routine is not necessary

All the serums and creams and sprays are really not necessary. The only products your face really needs to see are a cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizer. Sure serums and sprays are a nice addition but it isn’t something that needs to be done. Please don’t be mistaken, I have several potions in my cabinet but they are used less frequently than my essential girls.

  1. Science works

My routine consisted of natural plain Jane ingredients and my reasoning was that if I cleared my skin naturally, then my skin wouldn’t be dependent on a specific product. This may still ring true however, ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, and other acids work wonders for your skin. I’m no chemist and these ingredients should be tailored to your skin type but from personal experience, there is nothing wrong with incorporating chemicals in your routine.

Living in New York with all 5 seasons, my routine is constantly changing. The beauty industry has grown and continues to attempt inclusivity with each celebrity brand launch. That said, there are so many products tailored for different skin types, and finding what works for you has never been easier. I’ll make a separate post about my holy grail products and yes i’m too embarrassed to share which flavor of Dr. Bronner soap I used.

Until next time! XoXO
